The Terrace Houses are the best-preserved thing in Ephesus and the most skipped: a separate ticket and a strict schedule keep the big coach groups out, which is precisely why you should go in. Under a single protective roof, six houses of the Roman rich climb the hillside — frescoed walls, mosaic floors, marble panelling, under-floor heating, private courtyards — sealed by earthquake rubble for seventeen centuries and excavated with dental-grade patience.
This tour gives the houses what they deserve: a full hour or more inside, with a guide who can read the paintings — which wall shows Eros, where the philosophers argue, why a lion strolls across a dining-room floor — plus the classic city route before and after.
